Biosecurity and fish welfare in Serbia

In October 2023, Stojmir Stojanovski from North Macedonia visited the University of Novi Sad in Serbia on a short term scientific mission (STSM). The title of the project was ‘Importance of biosecurity for function-based concept of welfare of fishes in aquaculture’. The hosts of the STSM were Prof. Mirjana Djukic Stojcic and Prof. Miroslav Urosevic.

The focus of the STSM was on enhancing the welfare of fish in aquaculture through a function-based approach. This concept emphasizes not only the physical health and biological functioning of fish but also their overall welfare. The research underscored the importance of biosecurity measures and their positive impact on fish health and productivity. Key factors such as well-trained staff, optimal water quality, and effective disease prevention were identified as essential for promoting positive fish welfare.

The STSM facilitated direct engagement with various stakeholders, including visits to fish farms (carp) of different sizes and a fish feed factory. These interactions provided valuable insights into the practical aspects of fish welfare and biosecurity in Serbia. Emphasis was placed on humane practices and the implementation of the best available technology to monitor fish performance and environmental quality. The outcomes of this mission are expected to contribute to ongoing research and collaboration efforts, ultimately aiming to enhance fish welfare standards and biosecurity protocols in the region.
